A brief history of bracelets

The word bracelet comes from the Greek word “Brachile” which means, “of the arm.” It also is derived from the term “armband” called braces used by French archers. The earliest recorded evidence of women wearing bracelets from the excavations at Mohenjo-Daro shows the statue of a women wearing bracelets and bangles, dating back 4500 years.

Bracelets are popular among women because they are light in weight, trendy, and not as expensive as bangles, which are more solid and heavier. Bracelets can be worn on any occasion or for no reason at all. Bracelets are perfect accessories for any kind of apparel or fashion trend.

Bracelets also can be made using a variety of materials such as natural fibers, shells, gold, silver, other metals, beads, semi-precious and precious stones, and gems. By the 20th century, bracelets became a fashion accessory, and with industrialization, it was produced in large numbers.

With the advent of designer jewelry and high-end brands entering the jewelry business, mass-produced bracelets were no longer niche. Like many other jewelry types, designers entered the fray and were making customized bracelets. In the beginning, silver was the most popular metal for bracelets, but now there is no limit to the choices available.

Today, handmade bracelets are more popular than those made in a factory as they not only are made to the preference of the customer but are also unique in design. Young adults prefer trendy, funky bracelets with quotes or names stamped. These requests are taken care of by the jewelers. Many jewelers also offer to customize bracelets based on the outfits and the occasion they are planning to wear it.

Leather, pearl, glass, gold, silver, and diamond are some of the most sought-after materials for handmade bracelets. Many designers work with just one material sometimes incorporating expensive stones like diamonds and rubies, based on requests from their clients.

With influences from the world over, handmade bracelets today not only reflect the personality of the maker but also the customer and the culture they are based on. Tribal and ethnic designs have influenced the new trends in jewelry and hence in bracelets too. Handmade bracelets are also an excellent gift option to suit any occasion, particularly for birthdays and anniversaries. And with a few charms, it only makes it more personal and special.
